Dungeons of Hinterberg | Hype Check
With Microbird Games’ Dungeons of Hinterberg now only a few days away, we wanted to touch base with some of our team to see how they’re feeling about the game. We’ve seen a range of media up to this point, from gameplay showcases and trailers, we’ve seen the press releases, and heard the talk, but how are we feeling? That’s where we’re bringing Hype Check into the mix; to get a gauge on what the prospective players are thinking. So here’s how we’re feeling about Dungeons of Hinterberg.

I played the Dungeons of Hinterberg demo during the steam next fest/Summer games fest showcase. I really enjoyed everything about it, despite the fact it made me a little motion sick. I wasn’t able to play for a long time, but I got to play enough that I was able to appreciate the art style, the story, the mechanics and the first dungeon. By having a variety of dungeons, Dungeons of Hinterberg can introduce new and interesting mechanics for each dungeon. These abilities often translate to outside the dungeon, but can only be used in the same area as the dungeon. The first dungeon reminded me of Super Mario Galaxy, but it also made my motion sickness unbearable so I had to stop there. Great game but maybe in short bursts for me. I especially liked the hoverboard traversal.

I love these hype checks because they show things I’d never consider. There’s a podcast out there whose name escapes me, all about why mayors of towns might be interested in building a dungeon for adventures. That’s very much the feel I get from this game. It’s got an incredibly striking art style, one that’s almost divisive within me, and an odd mix between life sim and dungeoneering ARPG combat. I’m not against this at all, hell, Rune Factory has been there and did it amazingly. I think I just need to sit and think on this one some more before I try it. It’s a cool concept for sure, I just don’t think I’m quite sold on it just yet.

I also gave the demo of this game a try during the last Steam Next Fest, and had a really great time. The movement and art style give it almost a Jet Set Radio feel, but with a bunch of Persona-esque relationship management stuff mixed in. Also dungeons with puzzles that feel sort of Zelda-y? There’s a lot going on with this game, all of which feel sort of reminiscent of other things, but all of which come together to make a pretty cool experience. I’m very excited that this one’s coming to Game Pass, which means I will absolutely be giving it a try when it arrives!

This is one that more or less flew by, but again there’s a bit of a vibe here in the visuals which certainly make it stand out. Plus, who can’t sympathise with a protagonist taking a breather from corporate drudgery to go conquer some dungeons.
I’m certainly up for giving it a spin sometime, but I kind of hope it appears on a couple more platforms, specifically those which I’ve got access to for playing on the couch (let’s face it, some games are PC desk games, and others are couch games, and this is easily the latter).
