PS5 Pro - The Game Assessments - Part 2
For anyone who might be considering dropping the $1199 AUD required to pick up a PS5, you’re going to want to know that the purchase is justified. Well for all that there are numerous technical upgrades present with the console, you also need the software to support those additions. I’ve been checking out 20 different PS5 titles, all now with Pro support, to share the changes that I’ve noticed and hopefully help you to decide whether the console upgrade is worth it. Here’s today’s line-up of titles
Horizon Forbidden West
Forbidden West was already one of the most impressive games that I’ve ever seen, both through the artistic lens, as well as the technical one. Now, similar to the Zero Dawn Remasters upgrade, Aloy’s latest adventure runs at 60FPS while looking absolutely sensational, the best of both the performance and fidelity modes. The same feature set that was present for Zero Dawn Remastered’s Pro update has been applied to Forbidden West, but with the newer title being designed first and foremost for PS5, and its next-gen features, the way light reflects and refracts, with particles passing through the space, that already looked great to begin with, looks even more lifelike now.
The Last Of Us Part I
A bit like Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered, I feel like the update of what is ultimately a PS3 game (in this case) isn’t going to be the best game to highlight improvements that come with a Pro console. The Pro running mode of Part I combines the best of the fidelity and performance modes with the game targeting 4K and 60FPS rather than needing to concede one way or the other. The Last Of Us titles have always been good at showing the way particles are flying through the air, whether those are lethal spores or not, and in 4K the detailing is sensational, while in combat the the game runs incredibly smoothly with the benefit of that additional detailing. This is the definitive version of the game on consoles, but it’s not an enormous leap
Rise Of The Ronin
The patch notes for Rise Of The Ronin confused me at first, with the Prioritise Framerate mode receiving visual improvements, and the Prioritise Graphics option receiving framerate improvements. In both theory, and practice, the two modes now look incredibly similar to each other, and at least in my experience, I couldn’t see much difference between the two options. Perhaps, similar to what I noted yesterday with Star Wars Outlaws, Rise Of The Ronin could simply strip the choice for Pro players if they’re going to be the same. Or perhaps I’ve not seen the game in the best environments to highlight the improvements
Dragon’s Dogma II
Look, Dragon’s Dogma II isn’t known for being a stunner, but the Pro patch for the game has made a not-insignificant difference to the final product. Dragon’s Dogma II offers a “Balanced” option which brings with it higher framerates and sharper visuals. I was thoroughly impressed by the improvements that came with this patch, it doesn’t make the game into a stunner of any sort, but the improvements were perhaps more immediately noticeable with Dragon’s Dogma II than with any other game I’ve played so far
